ITA - Roma: Tor Vergata - le Vele di Calatrava
Located in a south-eastern suburban zone of Rome, it had to be the main sport center for 2009 swimming world championship.
But due to cost increases and construction delays the championship was eventually held in an another venue and the project was abandoned even if recently there is word of a resumption of construction.
The main part of the project involved two sport halls both covered by the distinctive steel and glass structure that reminds to sails unfolded to the wind, one for swimming, that is the one now under a Sail, and one for basket and volleyball.
The Calatrava’s Sails amaze for their concave and convex shapes that give a sinuous appearance to the whole structure.
Exploring the site it is interesting to note that after 10 years of abandon the structure is still in a good shape: the concrete did not crack and the steel did not rust.
